“Union coach Peter Nowak is one intense dude. I can describe his intensity in one quick story,” said Petke
Whether he will be patrolling the sidelines of Red Bull Arena or talking to his assistant coach, John Hackworth, Philadelphia
Union coach Peter Nowak is one intense dude. “I can describe his intensity in one quick story,” said Petke
The scenario occurred at D.C. United practice on the day before the 2004 MLS Cup in Carson, Calif.
“We’re doing a light, little possession and Christian Gomez, probably the biggest reason why we won the championship that year, takes the ball from him,” Petke said. “He got mad and took his legs out a day before we played. That’s who he is and that’s his competitiveness. He wants to win at everything.
“The thing I always respected about Peter is, like him or hate him, the one thing is, he holds you accountable. He doesn’t care who it is. He can have [Lionel] Messi playing for him. If Messi doesn’t do what he wants to be done in the game plan, he’s going to sit down. I always respected that. I think that’s a big reason why we were successful that year because everybody knew what was expected of them.”
So, did Petke like Nowak?
“It was the type of thing at the time I respected his soccer style and everything, didn’t quite like the way he treated players sometimes,” he said. “But it’s the type of thing as soon as I went to Colorado, I missed it immediately and wished i could play for him again. He was, without a doubt, one of the top coaches in [my] 13 years in this league.” – read full story by Michael Lewis at BigAppleSoccer.com
