HARRISON, NJ (May 12, 2010) – A two-goal performance by forward John Wolyniec and a Sinisa Ubiparipovic long-range strike gave the New York Red Bulls a 3-0 win over the New England Revolution in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Play-In Match at Red Bull Arena Wednesday night. With the victory, the Red Bulls advance to face the Colorado Rapids on May 26 at 8:00 PM at Red Bull Arena in the final MLS qualifying game. The winner in that match will advance to the main tournament bracket. New York maintained its unbeaten record at Red Bull Arena since it opened in March, improving its mark to 6-0-0 in all competitions.

New York took the lead nine minutes before halftime. Red Bulls midfielder Brian Nielsen put an onside Conor Chinn through alone on goal. Chinn’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth. Wolyniec’s first attempt off the rebound was deflected before the forward knocked his second try in for his 33rd career goal for the club in all competitions. Moments later, Wolyniec could have made it 2-0, but hit his shot over the bar after Danleigh Borman cut the ball into the box and it ricocheted out.

In the 43rd minute, Chinn had a golden opportunity to tap it into the net off a Chris Albright cross. However, the forward mishit it and the ball floated to Shuttleworth. New England’s Marko Perovic had the visitors’ best chance up to that point in the 50th minute when he unleashed a blast that Sutton could only parry away.

New York put the game away with two quick second half goals. In the 62nd minute, off a free kick, Nielsen laid it to Ubiparipovic, who lined a shot from 20-yards-out past Shuttleworth and into the side netting. Ubiparipovic was the creator in the team’s third goal in the 64th minute, firing a blast that Shuttleworth pushed away. The rebound fell to Wolyniec, who chipped it in for his second goal of the game.

Substitute Juan Agudelo nearly made it 4-0 13 minutes from full time with a long range effort that was punched away by Shuttleworth.

On Saturday, May 15, New York faces Seattle Sounders FC at 7:30 PM in a MLS regular season match (TV: MSG; Radio: WADO 1280 AM).
