First Team Assistant Coach Mike Matkovich to lead Super-Y League Teams

CHICAGO, IL (June 11, 2010) – The Chicago Fire announced Friday the tryout date for the club’s 2010 Super Y-League teams, to be held Thursday, June 17 at TOYOTA PARK. The club’s First Team Assistant Coach Mike Matkovich will oversee the tryouts and all five teams through the 2010 USL Super Y-League campaign.

Recently named the Technical Director of the Chicago Fire Juniors South, Matkovich brings a wealth of experience in player development to the Fire’s Super Y-League teams. The current Fire Assistant Coach was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Coach of the Year in 2000 for his work with the Chicago Magic, where he led the club to a number of Super Y-League North American Championships.

Matkovich also served as the Head Coach of the Chicago Fire PDL team from 2002-2006, recording a 79-15-4 record over his five seasons at the helm. Hailing from Frankfort, IL, Matkovich is currently the Head Coach of the United States U-18 Men’s National Team.

“I’m very excited to take charge of this important player development program,” said Matkovich. “The Super Y-League works well in concert with our CFJ programs and gives players more competitive regional matches and the chance to play teams from all over the continent in big game situations.”

Chicago Fire Super Y-League teams are supplemental to a player’s current club team and players
