This is huge, big time SAMBA in Silicon Valley. Once worth 27 million dollars Brazilian star to join San Jose Earthquakes in the biggest transfer deal in club history.

How big this deal really is?

Per MLS policy details about his contract are confidential, so we don’t know Geovanni new salary (at least now), however from the very beginning of his carrier he was always associated with big money.

Talented Geovanni was just very promising youngster when in summer 2001 Spanish giant FC Barcelona purchased him for around 27 million US dollars. He was just 20 years old at the time and signed a four-year deal with Catalonian pride, despite reported interest from Arsenal and Juventus.

Even for such talent as born in 1980 Geovanni it was hard to keep the spot in Barca roster, he played 26 games for Barca and went first on loan and later on transfer to Benfica. In Portugal he put some numbers,  in 91 games he scored 16 goals and won Portuguese Championship in 2004-2005 season, Portuguese Cup in 2004, and Portuguese Supercup in 2005

After almost 4 years with Benfica he return to Brazil and rejoined Cruzeiro (19 games 2 goals), where group of over 1000 fans welcomed him at the airport.

His full name is Geovanni Deiberson Maurício and after a year in Brazil dealing with his family troubles, Geovanni returned to Europe and joined Manchester City, where he is well remember  for scoring game winner against local rival Manchester United. In 2008 he was transferred to Hull, where he played 60 games and scored 11 goals.

He played one game for Brazilian national team in 2001 Copa America tournament against Mexico, and was a member of 200o Olympic Brazilian team in Sydney.

If Geovanni stays healthy he might have major impact on peace and distribution on Earthquakes midfield, and make the team more flexible. Expectation from Geovanni in San Jose are high, he is the highest paid and first ever designated player in club history and is set to be key player for club first playoff run since reincarnation in 2008.

Will he stay healthy?

Will Geovanni fix all the Earthquakes inconsistency on the middle?

How he will fit into his new team and MLS in general?

Those questions are not money related and remind to be answer, but this transfer is definitely prove that Earthquakes general manager John Doyle is not seating on his hands and waiting for miracle. At this time of the MLS season Geovanni deal regardless of price sound like bargain and always competitive John Doyle this time made very clever, brave move and either Earthquakes this year will make playoffs or not, he is well covered. .

John Doyle and coach Frank Yallop are working together as team and for the team, and they proved to do everything they can do deliver great product on the field and win. Silicon Valley soccer fans hope that Geovanni transfer is BIG step forward for the club.

Geovanni debut is expected in Red Bull Arena, on August 28, where Earthquakes with their Brazilian star will face New York high paid group with stars such Thierry Henry, Juan Pablo Angel and Rafa Marquez.

Congratulations Geovanni, congratulations San Jose Earthquakes
