WESTERN CONFERENCE FINAL

Los Angeles Galaxy vs. FC Dallas  0-3 (0-1)

The Galaxy won both regular season meetings between the teams. Mike Magee’s goal was the lone tally in an LA win May 20 at Pizza Hut Park. The teams then concluded the regular season against each other, the Galaxy winning 2-1 at The Home Depot Center to claim the Supporters’ Shield.

FC Dallas won a postseason series with Real Salt Lake for just the third time in club history, and for the first time since 1999. That year, they played the Galaxy in the Western Conference Finals, losing 2 games to 1 in a best-of-3 series.

David Beckham set up both Galaxy goals in their second leg victory, giving him three career postseason assists. “This is the best David has played since he has been a Galaxy player,” said Landon Donovan, and is hard to argue with that statement. Beckham in last 2 games was nothing less than spectacular for the Galaxy, keep in mind that he is very fresh after nursing injury for majority of this season.

The Galaxy are playing for a spot in MLS Cup for the 10th time in 15 years, by far the most semifinal appearances of any club in MLS history. The Galaxy have made a record six MLS Cup Final appearances, but they won the title just twice in 2002 and 2005.

The Galaxy had the sixth-best home record in the regular season (9-4-2), but have not lost a home playoff game since 1998. The Galaxy are now 20-2-1 all-time at home in the MLS Cup Playoffs; 6-0 at The Home Depot Center.

Does FC Dallas have any chances based on those statistics not much. FCD will have to win on the road to advance to a first MLS Cup; they were 4-3-8 away from Pizza Hut Park, the second-best road record in MLS (behind LA’s 9-3-3).

We should see good, close game with very possible overtime and even penalty kicks. FC Dallas do not have stars such as Donovan or Beckham, but they do have solid, organized, talented team coached by 2010 MLS coach of the year Schellas Hyndman. Now, what is my prediction? Home field, own crowd, and Galaxy at home are hard to beat – we know all that. This may sound crazy, but I would say in regulation tie or FC Dallas, but in overtime and in penalty kicks everything can happen, and if there will be OT expect Galaxy to advance to the final.

CHRIS PICK: X2 Draw or FC Dallas in regulation at 2.25 rate, but if OT Galaxy to advance

EASTERN CONFERENCE FINAL

Colorado Rapids (5W) vs. San Jose Eartquakes (6W) 1-0 (1-0)

CHRIS PICK: X2 draw or Earthquakes win at 2.1 rate

MLS CUP PLAYOFFS FORMAT

Playoff Format: Conference Semifinal series are conducted in a home-and-home, aggregate-goal format. The lower seeded team in the Conference Semifinal hosts the first game. The winners of those four series advance to single-game Conference Championships that will determine the MLS Cup Finalists.

The team that scores the most goals in the home-and-home series advances to the single elimination Conference Championship. If the teams are tied after 180 minutes in the Conference Semifinal series, a 30-minute extra time period (divided into two 15-minute periods) will be played followed by kicks from the penalty mark, if necessary. The team with the higher seed between the two Conference finalists will host the Conference Championship game.

In the case of ties after 90 minutes of regulation in the Eastern and Western Conference Championship games and MLS Cup, 30 minutes of extra time (divided into two 15-minute periods) would be played followed by kicks from the penalty mark, if necessary, to determine the winners.
