Jamaica wins second straight Caribbean title

Jamaica won its second straight Digicel Caribbean Cup and fifth overall Sunday, outlasting Guadeloupe 5-4 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw. Jamaica prevailed when Guadeloupe captain Jean Luc Lamboude – whose 78th-minute goal beat Cuba 2-1 in the semifinals on Friday and put the Gwada Boys into the title match — shot wide left on the last attempt of the shootout.

Earlier, Cuba claimed third place for a second time in four years with a 1-0 victory over Grenada.

All four teams will head to the CONCACAF Gold Cup June 5-25.


Monterrey qualifies to 2011-12 Group Stage; Central American sides near climax

Mexico

Monterrey won its second title in a year, beating Santos 3-0 in the second leg of the Torneo Apertura final in Mexico. Santos won the first leg 3-2 at home on Thursday. Monterrey’s victory gave it a place in the Group Stage of the 2011-12 Champions League while Santos will begin in the Preliminary Round.

El Salvador

Metapan and Firpo both took a step toward the Torneo Apertura final in El Salvador by winning the first legs of their semifinal series. Metapan defeated Aguila 2-1 while Firpo beat Alianza 2-1. The second legs will be played Sunday. The winner of the single-game final Torneo Apertura final on December 19 will qualify for the 2011-12 Champions League.

Honduras

Olimipa and Real Espana drew 1-1 in the first leg of the final of the Honduran Apertura. The second leg will be played Saturday in Estadio Morazan. The winner will advance to next year’s Champions League.

Panama

Both semifinal match-ups in the Torneo Apertura in Panama ended goalless leaving Sunday’s second legs to determine the championship contenders. Tauro and Chorillo will meet in Panama City while Arabe Unido will host San Francisco in Colon. The winner of the single-game Panamanian final to be played on December 17 will qualify for next year’s Champions League.

Costa Rica

Alajuelense and Herediano will face off in the finals of the Costa Rican Torneo de Invierno beginning Sunday in Heredia before finishing December 19 in Alajuela. The winner is guaranteed at least a berth in the Preliminary Round of the Champions League.

Guatemala

Comunicaciones defeated Mictlan 3-1 on aggregate and Suchitepequez prevailed over Heredia 4-3 over two legs to advance to the semifinals of the Guatemalan Apertura. Comunicaciones will face rival Municipal, while Suchitepequez will meet Marquense. The winner of the Apertura will qualify for the Champions League.

 

Pachuca to face TP Mazembe in Club World Cup quarterfinals

CONCACAF Champions League winner Pachuca returns to the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on Friday, facing Congolese side TP Mazembe in the quarterfinals.

Pachuca is coming off a quarterfinal elimination in the Mexican Apertura Liguilla playoffs, having been ousted by eventual champion Monterrey.

This is Pachuca’s third trip in the last four years to the Club World Cup, where it lost in the quarterfinals in 2007 and finished fourth in 2008.
 

Mexico reclaims CONCACAF title and El Salvador also qualifies to World Cup in Beach Soccer

Antonio Barbosa scored four times to rally Mexico from a three-goal deficit, and led El Tri to a 5-3 victory over El Salvador on Sunday to wrest away the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship crown.

It was Mexico’s second title in three years and returned the trophy north for the first time since 2008.

The two teams already had clinched their berths in next year’s Beach Soccer World Cup in Italy.

Earlier, the two-time champion United States consoled itself for missing out on the World Cup for a third straight time with a 7-5 victory over Costa Rica and a third-place finish.

In the all important Semi-Final match-ups on Saturday which determined the CONCACAF Qualifiers to the FIFA World Cup, Mexico prevailed over the USA on penalties after a 1-1 tie, while El Salvador did the same with Costa Rica following a 3-3 tie.

 

Honduras qualifies for U-20 finals

Antony Lozano and Gustavo Carias both scored for a second straight game and led Honduras to a 3-0 victory over Belize on Sunday that qualified the Catrachos for the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship.

With Wednesday’s opening 4-0 win over El Salvador, Honduras finished atop Group 2 to join Group 1 winner Panama and host Guatemala in the U-20 finals February 14-27.

El Salvador, which defeated Belize 6-1 on Friday, finished second in the group and will face Group 1 runner-up Costa Rica in a two-leg playoff the weekends of December 11-12 and December 18-19 for Central America’s fourth and last berth in the U-20 finals.

Besides automatic North American qualifiers Canada, Mexico and the United States, Cuba, Guadeloupe and Jamaica already have clinched berths from the Caribbean, with two spots still undetermined. Suriname faces Trinidad on Friday and December 19 to determine one of the berths.

 

Remaining U-17 berths to be decided in Caribbean qualifying

The final two berths in the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship will be decided this week when the Dominican Republic hosts Barbados, Guyana and Haiti Wednesday through Sunday.

Second-round Group F will complete the 12-team field set for February 14-17 in Jamaica. Guatemala earned Central America’s fifth and final berth, beating Nicaragua in a two-leg playoff November 26 to join Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador and Panama.

Canada and the United States have qualified automatically while Trinidad & Tobago and Cuba have clinched two of the Caribbean’s sports along with host Jamaica.
