UPDATE June 28, 2011 – Although not officially signed as yet, Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini says Ricardo Alvarez has “already signed” for Arsenal (As reported by Chris Burton at SkySports).

If confirmed, the Velez Sarsfield midfielder will bolster the ranks in the Arsenal squad – but some fans believe it may mean that the influential Samir Nasri is moving on. Palermo were also chasing the player but discussions with the Argentine club led the Palermo president to make his comments and admit that he had missed out on Alvarez.

The Gunners start their EPL season away at Newcastle United before two huge games;  At home to Liverpool, and away at Manchester United. With so little time to gel in new players before such vital games, Arsenal will be keen to resolve the on/off ‘Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona’ stories and begin organising their squad for 2011/12.

Supporters of the North London club see a goalkeeper and a central defender as the key acquisitions for Arsene Wenger to make this summer. Blackburn Rovers’ centre half, Chris Samba, has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates stadium, as has Gary Cahill at Bolton.

UPDATE June 14, 2011 – Ex-Arsenal player Perry Groves has told Sky Sports News that the club would be best served hanging on to Samir Nasri and letting Cesc Fabregas  leave the club.Arsenal logo

Groves believes that any transfer fee for Fabregas could be reinvested, invigorating the Arsenal squad. Fabregas has long been linked with a £50 million return to his previous club, Barcelona. Groves thinks these funds could rebuild his ex-team into title challengers once more.

Groves was also keen to stress the importance of Samir Nasri to the north London club. Nasri is out of contract next summer and talks on a new deal have been making little to no progress. The French star had been linked with a shock move to Manchester United but Groves was adamant that the Gunners should do all they can to hang on to him.

In transfer news, there have been strong rumours that Lille have agreed a fee with Arsenal and allowed their prize asset, Gervinho, to speak to the Londoners and arrange terms. Gervinho has been hot property already this summer and Arsene Wenger will be extremely keen to tie up any potential deal as soon as possible.

OUT

Mark Randall. Having been released by Arsenal, Randall has been snapped up on a one year contract by League One side, Chesterfield.  A product of the Arsenal youth system, Randall was unable to force his way into the first team squad and spent much of last season out on loan.
