Opening Match scores record TV audience

In Germany, an average of 14.1 million viewers tuned in for the host nation’s opening match. This represents nearly 20 per cent of the German population and almost 60 per cent of all those who were watching television during the game.

However, the match itself achieved an average audience of 15.4 million with a peak-minute audience of 18 million towards the end of the match, which represents one quarter of the German population.

This is a new record for a women’s football match in Germany, exceeding the audience that watched the Final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2003 USA by 35 per cent (Germany-Sweden had an average audience of 11.4m).

It compares well with men’s football audiences too, beating the average audience achieved for the Germany-Serbia Group Match at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa by almost 10 per cent.

In addition, this audience was the highest at-home audience achieved in Germany on Sunday, rating more than twice as high as the live Formula One.

In Canada, a combined average audience of 684,000 watched the match, which is the highest FIFA Women’s World Cup audience on record in the country and higher than the audiences for many of the men’s international matches over the past year.
