SANTA CLARA, California. – The San Jose Earthquakes defeated West Bromwich Albion of the English Premier League 2-1 in an international friendly on Tuesday at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Quakes goalkeeper David Bingham had the play of the night, sending the ball over 90 yards for a goal after the ball bounced over West Brom net minder Boaz Myhill in the third minute WATCH VIDEO

Khari Stephenson tacked on the eventual game winner in the 45th minute, smashing a shot from 35 yards that darted past Myhill just before the half to give San Jose a 2-0 lead. Jerome Thomas scored the lone goal for West Brom eight minutes into the second half.

The win was San Jose’s first against an English Premier League opponent. The Quakes previously drew 0-0 against club partner Tottenham Hotspur on July 17, 2010 at Buck Shaw Stadium and tied 1-1 against Aston Villa on May 13, 1997 at Spartan Stadium.

The Earthquakes return to league play this weekend as they head to Columbus to face the Crew at Crew Stadium on Saturday, July 16. The match is set to kick off at 4:30 p.m. PT and will air live on Comcast SportsNet Plus, 1220 KDOW (English) and 1370 KZSF (Spanish).

WEST BROMWICH ALBION Head Coach ROY HODGSON

EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH FRANK YALLOP

On tonight’s performance:

“I thought our performance was good. Any time it’s an exhibition match you worry it might be a bit of a dollar fare. It’s nice to take a break from our league stuff to kind of enjoy the game. The guys went out and tried to enjoy the game and tried to win, obviously, and we came out with a quality result.”

On goalkeeper David Bingham’s goal:

“West Brom were working against the sun. David actually just kicked it too far to be honest. The sun is bad for keepers on the south end. It was a fluky goal. I thought it was a good game though, I enjoyed it.”

On the goalkeeping as a whole:

“I thought (David) Bingham did well. He looked sharp, he made some great saves. He’s our top scorer right now. Both goalkeepers did well. Andrew (Weber) had a good save. It’s never easy coming in after half time, the player before having played so well. But it’s why we have them here – they’re both talented.”

EARTHQUAKES GOALKEEPER DAVID BINGHAM

On scoring first goal as an Earthquake:

“I didn’t even see it go in. I hit the ball, and I knew I over hit, so I turned around kind of upset. As I was walking back toward the line, I heard everybody yelling, so I turned around again in time to see the ball hit the net.”

On his first start:

“Well, the back line deserves credit; the defenders played well and did a great job all night. (West Brom) did not have any good looks up the middle or one-on-ones. Everyone was contested by a defender and they put up a lot of unbalanced shots.  The backline got in the way of those shots and really helped me out.”

EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER SIMON DAWKINS

On the importance of the win:

“It’s an EPL (English Premier League) team. They are strong team that finished in the middle of the table last season. We did really well playing them tonight. We played good soccer and played them out of the box. Now we can go into the weekend match with some confidence. We played well and beat an EPL team. It was really good to get the win.”

On goalkeepers David Bingham’s debut:

“I couldn’t believe he scored. When the referee stopped the game, I couldn’t believe it. I am so happy for him. He made a big save and then scored a goal; that’s weird for me to say in the same sentence. I was definitely shocked on the bench. I don’t think I’ve ever seen something like that before. He made some great point blank saves and kept us in it. I’m happy for him to finally get out there and play and he scores a goal.”
