David Beckham insists he has no regrets about effectively ending his career at the highest level by moving to Los Angeles Galaxy.

Beckham made a surprise switch to Major League Soccer in America in 2007, but many pundits felt he called time on his European career too soon.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star was unable to trigger the hoped-for explosion of interest in football in the United States and quickly became a bit-part player with England as well.

He returned to Europe twice for loan spells with AC Milan in a bid to prove his fitness to England coach Fabio Capello and even flirted with a loan switch to Tottenham Hotspur last season, before Galaxy ruled out that possibility.

Even so, Beckham is adamant he is still happy with his decision to move to California. “I have no regrets,” he told Sky Sports News. “Not one about wherever I have played and whatever I have done, I don’t think you can live your life like that.

“I always have to be sure about the decisions I have made. People may think it was the wrong decision for me to move over to America but I am fully confident with the decision I made.

“I was successful in Europe for many years; won many trophies with Manchester United and played at two of the biggest clubs in the world. I was successful at Real Madrid and I needed a new challenge, and I have enjoyed that challenge.”

Contract concludes soon
Beckham’s contract ends at the conclusion of the current MLS season and he will inevitably receive offers from clubs in the Premier League.

But the 36-year-old still retains a deep love for United – the club he supported as a child – and he admits it would be hard to play for another English team.

“I have always said that Manchester United is my one love and to play for another Premiership team would be difficult for me,” Beckham said.

“We are very happy in America as a family and we have been for the last five years. We love England and we miss it, of course, but as for myself playing back there? I don’t know.

“Things change so quickly and right now I am playing for Galaxy. I will look at myself at the end of the season, see how my body feels and if I feel good I will continue to play.”
