Real Salt Lake head coach Jason Kreis loves California sun, but can he find a way to beat there Galaxy on Saturday? by Chris Reiko
Real Salt Lake visiting Galaxy should be the game of the weekend, but also on Sunday extremely important game for Eastern Conference in Columbus where Crew in must win situation host United. In terms of entertainment expect some goals in Toronto and San Jose on Saturday.
span style=”color: #c0c0c0;”>My predictions record in 2011 MLS season 146-135 (accuracy 51.95 %). Predictions for midweek and weekend are usually published here 16-24 hours before the game time.
Sunday, October 2
Columbus Crew vs. D.C. United 2-1
The Crew now find themselves in fourth place in the East, just two points ahead of the final playoff spot, after their winless streak was stretched to six games in a midweek 2-1 loss at Sporting Kansas City. United are just a point out of the final wild card spot after a midweek loss of their own, 3-2 at Philadelphia Union. D.C. United will not have their key center back Brandon McDonald, who is suspended for yellow cards accumulation and that give huge advantage to the Crew. Columbus team will be missing injured Robbie Rogers, but key midfield Eddie Gaven is expected to start and that’s big positive for Ohio team. Absolute must win for the Crew and I believe that this time they will deliver.
CHRIS’ PICK 1 Crew to WIN
Vancouver Whitecaps FC vs. Portland Timbers 0-1
The BC Place era for Vancouver Whitecaps FC begins with another matchup against a Cascadia Cup rival, this time a visit by the Portland Timbers. Whitecaps FC have five games remaining in their inaugural MLS season, after a 3-1 loss to Seattle Sounders FC last weekend in the Empire Field finale. The other member of the expansion class of 2011, the Timbers are still in the hunt for a postseason berth, despite a 2-0 loss at the New York Red Bulls last Saturday. Timbers are clearly better team, but can they win on the road without suspended Captain Jack – Jewsbury and Kalif Alhassan? This could be challenging.
I believe we should see high scoring game at BC Place in Vancouver.
CHRIS’ PICK OVER 2.5 goals
Chivas USA vs. Philadelphia Union – 8:00
Chivas USA find themselves four points behind the final wild card spot entering the weekend, after ending a long winless run with a 3-0 home win against Toronto FC. Union are coming off a 3-2 midweek win against D.C. United that left them a point behind Sporting KC for the lead of the Eastern Conference.
Chivas USA striker Juan Pablo Angel and Union star Sebastien Le Toux, both know how to score and they both are on fire. We should see at least 3 goals in this match.
CHRIS’ PICK OVER 2.5 goals
Saturday, October 1
Colorado Rapids vs. FC Dallas 1-0
I don’t expect any big game from last year MLS Cup finalists, in fact this could be very boring one. FC Dallas got exposed last Wednesday in Panama where they lost to Tauro 5-3 in . Rapids also had some travel in the same competition to El Salvador, where they beat 3-1 Metapan. Both teams tired, to me that translate to low scoring game.
CHRIS’S PICK UNDER 2.5 goals
Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Real Salt Lake 2-1
Definitely MLS match of the weekend. Galaxy had very good, but tough game against Mexican club Morelia in . Los Angeles team won 2-1, but that can cost them in Saturday game. RSL in last 2 games vs. opponents located in lower part of Eastern Conference conceded 7 goals.
Galaxy are leader of the West, and they are the best. Expect high scoring show at The Home Depot Center and the host team to WIN
CHRIS’S PICK 1 Galaxy to WIN
San Jose Earthquakes vs. Sporting Kansas City 1-1
Except few players that will work for next year contracts and perhaps their new employer attention, The Earthquakes playing only for pride.
Lucky but impressive win over Crew on Wednesday, pushed Sporting into sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference for first time since April 2009, and proved that they are really dangers team.
On cozy Buck Shaw Stadium expect some offensive show from both sides. If I have to pick the winner, I am giving visitors more chances, but do not underestimate the Earthquakes. While the Quakes have won just once since June 11, they have a victory and three draws in their last five games. Both teams likely will score and I am confident that we will see more than 2 goals in this match.
CHRIS’S PICK OVER 2.5 goals.

New England Revolution vs. Seattle Sounders 1-2
The Revolution are on the verge of seeing their MLS Cup Playoffs hopes dashed, certainly unable to drop a single point the remainder of the season and then needing help, after a 3-2 loss in Chicago last weekend. Sounders FC have secured their place in the top 10 overall after a 3-1 win at Vancouver Whitecaps FC last Saturday. Sounders are clearly better team, but Revolution will not give them points easy. This game is a perfect candidate to a draw but I will support with Sounders WIN. Keep in mind that they traveled for this game from Guatemala, where they draw 2-2 with Comunicaciones. Sounders already clinched playoffs and they have important U.S. Open Cup final on Tuesday, so coach Sigi Schmid likely will rest some of the key players.
CHRIS’S PICK 1X Revolution WIN or Draw
Toronto FC vs. New York Red Bulls 1-1
The Red Bulls come into the week holding down the 10th spot in the overall standings and
the final wild card berth, after their 2-0 win against Portland last weekend. For TFC, it’s pretty much prestige at this point, their playoffs hopes are barely mathematically alive, but in Toronto no one believes in that many miracles.
Another must win for the Red Bulls but they seem to be doing fine under pressure. Red Bulls will score and I believe TFC will do too, so I think we should see at least 3 goals in this game.
CHRIS’S PICK OVER 2.5 goals
Houston Dynamo vs. Chicago Fire 1-1
Two of the hotter teams in Major League Soccer meet at Robertson Stadium on Saturday afternoon when the Houston Dynamo take on the Chicago Fire. The Dynamo have moved to the top of the Eastern Conference in recent weeks, coming off a huge 1-0 victory at FC Dallas last weekend. The Fire won for the fifth time in six games at midweek, a stunning 3-0 win at Real Salt Lake that keeps them firmly in the playoff hunt.
Fire are really on fire and when they hot, even hot Houston weather wont stop them.
CHRIS’S PICK X2 Draw or Chicago Fire WIN
PHILADELPHIA UNION v D.C. UNITED 3-2
CHRIS’S PICK OVER 2.5 goals
Sporting Kansas City vs. Columbus Crew 2-1
CHRIS’S PICK X2 Draw or Crew WIN
Real Salt Lake vs. Chicago Fire 0-3
CHRIS’S PICK OVER 2.5 goals
