LEVERKUSEN, Germany (Nov. 15, 2011) – The U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team wrapped up its 10-day training camp in Germany with a 1-1 tie against a Bayer Leverkusen side made up of first team reserves and U-23 players.

“It was a good game in terms of getting a different style of opponent,” said U.S. Soccer Youth Technical Director Claudio Reyna, who was serving as head coach for this camp. “Leverkusen sat back and tried to hit us on the counter. I thought we coped well and defended well in the first half. In the second half we started to play with a little bit more energy and look to try to win the game. We unfortunately gave up a goal from a set piece but overall the game was a success.”

After a scoreless first half, the game sprang to life in the second half, with the U.S. enjoying many of the chances. Forward Andrew Wooten nearly broke the deadlock, twisting and turning his man before firing over U.S. international David Yelldell in the Bayer Leverkusen goal.

In the 72nd minute, substitute Terrence Boyd broke the deadlock with a superb solo effort. From a throw in fellow substitute Mikkel Diskerud flicked the ball into the Leverkusen penalty area. Boyd did the rest, holding off his man and bring the ball down skillfully before firing past Yelldell from close range on the volley. It was Boyd’s second goal in as many scrimmages during his first U.S. national team camp.

Leverkusen leveled the match with its final chance of the game. A U.S. foul set up a dangerous opportunity 20 yards from goalkeeper David Bingham’s net. Leonardo Lima Ribeiro elected to go around the wall, forcing it through the crowded group and past Bingham on the line to level the score.

The final whistle brought the curtain down on this first camp for the U-23s as they move towards Olympic qualifying in March.

“Our main objective was to bring the group together to start the process for London 2012,” said Reyna. “Just having them here was great and we got to know them individually as well as collectively.”

“We got to train them at a pretty high intensity throughout the week and give them two competitive games. It was a treat to work with these players and we look forward to building from here towards qualifying in March.”
