Post-Match Quotes: U.S. U-20 WNT vs. Guatemala

U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team head coach Steve Swanson and select players discuss the team’s 6-0 win against Guatemala.

U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team head coach STEVE SWANSON
On the first game of the 2012 CONCACAF U-20 Women’s Championship:
“We were happy with the result. I think our performance was good at times and other times not as sharp as maybe we would have liked. We finished some good goals and we got better as the second half progressed. Those were good things to see. In this first game we felt our nerves a little bit and just weren’t as sharp as we had been up until this point. It’s the start of things and it’s good to get off to a good start.”

On what he told the team at halftime:
“We just needed to pick our tempo up a little bit. We were playing a little bit slow. They were sitting back against us and I thought we just needed to move the ball a little bit faster and make a little bit better decisions in the attacking half. Our service in the flank wasn’t great and that was something we talked about at halftime. We changed a few things in the midfield just to give us a little more space in there but the biggest thing was that we just had to improve our tempo. We just had to increase the speed of our play a little bit. I thought we got some good goals to start the second half and get settled in. That was good to see and it’s always good when you can talk about some things at halftime and then come out and make some of those adjustments happen on the field. Looking forward, I think we got a sense of the atmosphere at the stadium and the game and hopefully settled in a little bit more so we can be a little sharper in the next game.”

On playing in her first qualifying tournament:
“I think we were all very nervous when the game started but after a while we started playing together and we started possessing better than we were before. I don’t think we possessed as well as we could but overall we started getting better and better throughout the game.”

On getting her first game under her belt:
“Getting the first game over with is a great feeling. The nerves start going away and you can get prepared for the next game. We came out with a big win so going into the next game will be a lot better.”

On scoring three goals:
“It was great. Our whole team played great as a team and everyone, together, made those goals happen. It wasn’t just one player, we all had great possession and it resulted in some great goals.”

U.S. U-20 WNT midfielder MORGAN BRIAN
On playing the first game:
“The first game was good. Every time you go out onto the field in a tournament, you’re going to be a little nervous and everyone is not going to be playing together as well. But now, it’s good, we got the first game under our belt and we got some experience in the tournament.”

On the goals:
“The goals were good. We had some good crosses from the flank and we had two headers and a half-volley and we had some good balls in behind the defense.”

On the upcoming matches:
“We were able to get settled a little bit and play together. Now we know what it’s like and we’ll know what to expect so next time we won’t be so nervous and we’ll play our game from the start.”

U.S. U-20 midfielder JULIE JOHNSTON
On playing the first game of the qualifying tournament:
“A lot of the jitters are gone. I’m more relieved and relaxed and ready to face Cuba.”

On her goal:
“I got the second goal. It was an awesome feeling. We practiced that yesterday and coach gave me a few pointers on my shooting so right when the ball came to me I tried to calm down. I was like, ‘just hit it, you know how to do it.’ Someone sent a perfect ball back to me and I played it and put it into the upper-V.”
