Holders Spain continue preparations with Serbia win

Spain continued their UEFA EURO 2012 preparations with a 2-0 victory against Serbia in Switzerland courtesy of Adrián López’s debut goal and a Santi Cazorla penalty.

Shorn of the FC Barcelona and Athletic Club players who competed in last night’s Copa del Rey final and Chelsea FC duo Juan Mata and Fernando Torres, coach Vicente del Bosque had a chance to assess his options ahead of naming a final 23-man squad on Sunday. Adrián boosted his chance of selection with the opener just past the hour before Cazorla sealed victory for the holders from the penalty spot.

With David Villa ruled out of the tournament through injury, Álvaro Negredo looked to stake a claim for a striking berth and drew a smart stop from goalkeeper Damir Kahriman with a shot from distance early on. Spain continued to dominate possession as the half progressed but were limited to speculative efforts such as Xabi Alonso’s opportunistic strike from deep inside his own half, which dropped narrowly over the crossbar.

Juanfran was also making his Spain debut but could not find the target as he fired wide with an effort from the right. Álvaro Domínguez, Javi García, Beñat Etxebarría and Adrián came on to make their international bows after the break and the latter pair were involved in Spain’s 64th-minute opener. Racing onto Beñat’s lofted pass from midfield, Jesús Navas crossed to the far post, where Adrián stooped to head in.

An integral part of Club Atlético de Madrid’s triumphant UEFA Europa League campaign and a 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship winner, Adrián was involved again 15 minutes from time as the world and European champions doubled their advantage. Branislav Ivanović felled the 24-year-old and Cazorla kept his cool from the penalty spot.

Next up for Spain are friendly matches against the Korea Republic on Wednesday and China PR on 3 June before they begin the defence of their crown against Italy in Gdansk a week later.
