MLS Week 14 Preview, Picks and Prediction

I anticipated low scoring weekend, but is not as bad in terms of goals. As I said upsets are on the way, and I ended 2-5 on Saturday in 14th week of my MLS predictions.

Whitecaps beat the Red Bulls 2-1 in New York and produced mega upset of the week, and also Montreal Impact 2-1 win in Kansas City was not expected by many.

In general due to lineup rotations, I expected more  low scoring games this weekend, but in Saturday we had RSL offensive explosion, and 4 goals in Colorado which damaged my record.

Sounders are delivered easily as favorites.

We have last 2 games left on Sunday, and very interesting matchup Revolution vs LA Galaxy, and little less enterteining Fire vs D.C. United game. Both should be low scoring with high probablility of home teams wins.

Sixteen MLS teams played in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup this week as America’s oldest soccer tournament enters the third round. Roster depth will be tested this weekend, especially for five of the Western Conference teams – San Jose Earthquakes, Colorado Rapids, FC Dallas, LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders – who had to travel East for matches against lower division teams. Every year, weekend after these U.S. Open Cup this phase includes a few upsets.

Sunday, June 2

New England Revolution vs. LA Galaxy, 4:30 p.m. (NBCSN)

Robbie Keane scored the first hat trick of his MLS career to lead the Galaxy to a 4-0 win against Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday at The Home Depot Center. It was his fifth multiple-goal game in 38 league appearances; he has 23 goals total in MLS regular season play.

It was the second hat trick by a Galaxy player this season. The first came in the opening game of the season from Mike Magee – who was dealt to Chicago before the match for the rights to Robbie Rogers. Rogers made his Galaxy debut, coming on as a late substitute vs. Seattle.

For a second consecutive week, Diego Fagundez and Juan Agudelo were the goal scorers as the Revolution won 2-0 for the second game in a row, this time at home against Toronto FC.

Fagundez has scored goals in three consecutive games, the first Revs player to do that since Saer Sene did it last May 12-26.

The teams met once a year ago, the Revolution coming away from The Home Depot Center with a 3-1 win against the Galaxy on March 31.

Chicago Fire vs. D.C. United, 5 p.m. (UniMas)

The Fire haven’t defeated United at home since a 1-0 win in 2006. Since then, United have won three of their seven trips to Toyota Park, with four draws, including a 1-1 result in the final match of last season.

United’s 4-2 victory last Aug. 22 at RFK Stadium was their first vs. Chicago since Aug. 29, 2009, a 1-0 win at Toyota Park. The Fire won two of the four meetings in between, with two draws.

The Fire’s Quincy Amarikwa scored the team’s first goal since April 20, ending a 361-minute shutout streak, an acrobatic effort for the equalizer in a 1-1 draw at Real Salt Lake.

D.C. United saw their winless streak extended to 10 games in a 2-0 loss to the Portland Timbers on Saturday at RFK Stadium, matching the club record set July 4-Aug. 25, 2002.

Saturday, June 1

Toronto FC vs. Philadelphia Union 1-1

Jack McInerney scored his ninth goal of the season, his second in as many games – but left Canada with only a share of the MLS Golden Boot lead after the Impact’s Marco Di Vaio hit for a hat trick in a 5-3 Montréal victory on Saturday.

The teams are meeting for the second time this season. McInerney’s goal in second-half stoppage time answered a Robert Earnshaw goal and gave Union a share of the points in a 1-1 draw April 13 at PPL Park.

The only road victory in the all-time series came at BMO Field on May 28, 2011, when Union claimed their biggest-ever victory, a 6-2 defeat of TFC.
Toronto FC saw their losing streak extended to five games and their winless streak stretched to 10 in their 2-0 loss at New England last weekend. TFC now 1-17-8 in its last 26 MLS games, dating back to last July 28.

New York Red Bulls vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC 1-2

For the second time in as many games, a dramatic goal in stoppage time gave the Red Bulls a result, as Jamisón Olave scored in the 91st minute Sunday to leave New York with a 2-2 draw with Columbus. The Red Bulls are undefeated in seven games, their longest unbeaten run in a single season since their club-record nine-game streak in 2000.

Playing as a center forward, Camilo Sanvezzo scored his third goal in the last six games in Whitecaps FC’s last match, a 2-2 home draw with Portland two weeks ago.
Before the league encounter, Whitecaps FC will be looking to claim the Canadian Championship for the first time when they play host to the Montréal Impact in the second leg of the final Wednesday at BC Place. The teams played to a scoreless draw at Stade Saputo on May 15.

The teams have played to three draws in three all-time meetings, the score on each occasion 1-1, including last June 20 at BC Place.

Columbus Crew vs. Houston Dynamo 1-1

Dominic Oduro scored his fifth goal in the last eight games to give the Crew an early lead against New York, but was forced to leave with an injury after just eight minutes as the teams reached a 2-2 draw Sunday at Red Bull Arena.

Brad Davis scored the Dynamo’s first goal in three matches for a first-half lead at Sporting KC, but the teams left deadlocked after a 1-1 draw that extended Houston’s winless streak to three games.

The Crew have an eight-game unbeaten streak alive against the Dynamo, over the last four seasons, with three wins and five draws in that time. Houston’s last victory in the series came Aug. 2, 2008.

The teams have played to three consecutive 2-2 draws, including both meetings a year ago.

Sporting Kansas City vs. Montreal Impact 1-2

Marco Di Vaio scored the first hat trick in his MLS career and the first in the Impact’s MLS history when he netted three goals in 30 minutes in the 5-3 victory Saturday against Philadelphia. It was the fastest one player had scored three goals in a game since Real Salt Lake’s Álvaro Saborío scored a hat trick in 15 minutes last July 7 vs. Portland.

The five goals were also a club record in MLS for the Impact. They scored four goals twice during their inaugural league season, in wins vs. Seattle and Houston that came a week apart (June 16-23).

Kei Kamara scored his first goal in his return to MLS in Sporting’s 1-1 home draw with Houston on Sunday. Kamara scored 11 goals in 33 league games for SKC a year ago before joining Norwich City FC of the English Premier League on loan, where he scored once in 11 appearances.

The teams are meeting for the second time this season. Goals from Claudio Bieler and Graham Zusi gave Sporting a 2-0 win March 30 in Kansas City.

Colorado Rapids vs. FC Dallas 2-2

FC Dallas extended their home undefeated streak to 12 games in a 1-0 win against San Jose on Saturday, matching the longest in club history, set June 9,

The Rapids extended their overall undefeated streak to five games with their 2-0 victory against Chivas USA at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, their third shutout in the last four games and the fifth overall for goalkeeper Clint Irwin.

Before last weekend’s game, Rapids midfielder Nate Sturgis had scored one goal in 84 league appearances, during the 2010 season with Seattle. He has since scored two goals in as many weeks, capping Colorado’s win over the weekend.

The teams are meeting for the second time this season. An 11th-minute goal from Jackson gave FC Dallas a 1-0 victory as the clubs met on the opening weekend of the season in Frisco.

Real Salt Lake vs. San Jose Earthquakes 3-0

Álvaro Saborío scored his first goal since March 16, literally jumping over Chicago Fire defender Bakary Soumare to head home Real Salt Lake’s goal in their 1-1 draw Saturday night at Rio Tinto Stadium.

RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando became the fourth-player in MLS history to reach 30,000 regular season minutes played on Saturday night. Rimando now has played 30,033 regular season minutes, trailing New York goalkeeper Kevin Hartman (37,620), former New England midfielder and current Houston assistant coach Steve Ralston (33,142) and Vancouver goalkeeper Joe Cannon (30,731) on the all-time list.

The Earthquakes were shut out at the attacking end for a second time in three games and the fifth time this season in their 1-0 loss at FC Dallas on Saturday. A year ago, San Jose was shut out just twice, the fourth-lowest total in MLS history.

The teams are meeting for the second time this season. Alvaro Saborío scored twice in the game’s final 10 minutes to give Real a 2-0 victory in the season opener for both clubs, March 3 at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Chivas USA vs. Seattle Sounders FC 0-2

Sounders FC are unbeaten in their last eight meetings with Chivas USA, since Chivas won the first two meetings ever between the clubs in 2009. Seattle has won four times with four draws, including a 6-2 victory last Aug. 25 at The Home Depot Center, the biggest victory in the club’s MLS history.

Sounders FC had scored eight goals in two games before their trip to face the LA Galaxy – then allowed four goals in the loss Sunday evening, all in the first half. It tied the most goals Seattle has allowed in its MLS history, the most conceded in a single half.

Chivas USA lost a fourth consecutive match and saw their overall winless streak extended to seven games in their 2-0 loss at Colorado on Saturday evening. They have been outscored 13-1 over the losing run.
