MLS Week 23 Preview, Picks and Predictions

Fully loaded with all the players coming back from CONCACAF Gold Cup, and well entertained in MLS All-Star game, all teams seem to be are ready for 23rd league action this weekend.

Sporting, Sounders, Impact, Earthquakes and Revolution all are my favorites to win their matches this weekend. I also posted 2 double plays for Philadelphia and San Jose games. Earthquakes are dangerous at home, and with all the players back, Chivas USA defensive line led by Carlos Bocanegra will be tested on Saturday night. In Philadelphia, Union expected to create many scoring chances, but Fire are not going to let them win easy, and likely to score at least once.

Current week 23 record 00

Last 21st week of 2013 MLS season finished with 45 record.

Saturday, August 3

Sporting Kansas City vs New York Red Bulls – 6.30 PM, NBCSN

Sporting Kansas City had their undefeated streak put to an end after six matches, falling 1-0 to the Montréal Impact on Saturday evening at Stade Saputo. Sporting are in first place in the Eastern Conference with 36 points from 21 matches. However last second game winner for Impact, did not changed much in team spirit.

The Red Bulls suffered a massive blow when it was revealed that Tim Cahill suffered a torn posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee following a challenge by RSL’s Yordany Alvarez in the fourth minute.

“It’s a very big loss to us,” said Red Bulls head coach Mike Petke. “It was a very reckless and careless challenge. I don’t think it was intentional, I don’t think Salt Lake plays like that, but I think it was just a very careless challenge to the knee and it’s going to be a big loss for us. The fortunate part of it, is that [we’re] looking at a three- to four-week recovery time.

Expect good game, and solid performance by KC, they know how to play Red Bulls, and they have more chance to get 3 points at home.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: 1 Sporting to WIN

D.C. United vs Montreal Impact – 7.30 PM

Miss-match, where visitors are heavy favorites to get easy 3 points.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: 2 Impact to WIN

Philadelphia Union vs Chicago Fire – 8.00 PM

This could be one of the most entertaining game of the weekend, but Union should be able to take full home advantage
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: 1 Union to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals

Colorado Rapids vs Real Salt Lake – 8.30 PM

Rapids with Hendry Thomas suspended for caution accumulation; through August 11, hosting RSL. Visitors will come to Colorado without their 3 suspended starters Chris Wingert, Tony Beltran, Yordany Alvarez. RSL coach Jason Kreis is well known of preparing youngsters for tough challenges, but I think he will be happy with 1 point this Saturday, and that will visitors goal, and likely outcome.

CHRIS’S PREDICTION: DRAW

Houston Dynamo vs Columbus Crew – 9.00 PM

The Crew regardless of injuries, and despite of last results played decent soccer. Terrible errors in the final minutes by Chad Marshall and goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum, cost Crew at least 4 points in last 2 matches. This will be first Crew game under new owner, and motivation is high there, very high. The Crew played well in Columbus last year, and they feel enough comfortable there to pull upset and win.

CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 goals

San Jose Earthquakes vs Chivas USA – 10.00 PM UniVision

The Earthquakes have put things together, and once again they seem to be on track. Small field at Buck Shaw Stadium works for their style very well, and other than Quakes win, also expect at least 3 goals.

CHRIS’S PREDICTION: 1 Earthquakes to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals

Seattle Sounders vs FC Dallas – 10.30 PM

Based on multiple sources Sounders, about to acquire one of the best U.S. players in the history of American soccer Clint Dempsey. News like that, can only motivate rest of the Sounders team, and FC Dallas will have hard time to escape from Seattle with a point.

CHRIS’S PREDICTION: 1 Sounders to WIN

Portland Timbers vs Vancouver WhiteCaps – 11.00 PM

Both teams renew their Cascadia Cup rivalry in a game with massive postseason implications as the clubs face off Saturday evening at Jeld-Wen Field. The Timbers have never lost to Whitecaps FC since the two teams have played in MLS competition. The Timbers have won four of the six meetings all-time, including two of the three contests at BC Place. I don’t see how Timbers can loose this match, but their last loss to the Earthquakes could be some signal.

Referee Silviu Petrescu should be busy in Portland, but expect conservative approach from both coaches, and therefore we shouldn’t see more than 2 goals there.

CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 goals

Sunday, August 4

New England Revolution vs Toronto FC – 7.30 PM

The Revolution team knows that if they want to keep their playoffs hopes alive, they absolutely have to win this match. Motivation and home field should be enough for Revs to collect 3 points vs struggling TFC.

CHRIS’S PREDICTION: 1 Revolution to WIN
