MLS Week 3 Preview, Picks and Predictions

After brutal reality check with 3-12 record in week 2, time to recover some losses in week 3. At Rio Tinto, Real hosting Galaxy, and Impact home opener vs Sounders will get most of the attention, but there is plenty of interesting matches across the board.

Toronto FC, FC Dallas, and Impact all three are my heavy favorites to win their games, but I also like Revolution and Fire, and draws in Kansas City and Colorado.

Chicago Fire vs. New York Red Bulls 1-1
Frank Yallop is winless as Fire coach, but that about to change. Although Fire are far from being a good team, Red Bulls are weak in many areas, and Yallop should be able to take advantage of it and get his first win as Chicago boss.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Fire to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals
Montreal Impact vs. Seattle Sounders 0-2
The Impact likely to win their home openner, and we should see some goals there as well. The Sounders will play without their suspended for next 2 games leader Clint Dempsey. After 2 losses on the road, is about time for new Impact head coach
Frank Klopas, to celebrate victory.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Impact to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals
New England Revolution vs. Vancouver Whitecaps 0-0
Whitecaps are disaster on the road, and are unable to beat Chivas USA playing over 80 minutes with a man advantage. Revolution after two losses, going to be ready for visitors, even more talent seem to be on Vancouver side. I’m picking Revs to win 1-0, or 2-0. I don’t believe that Whitecaps will score there.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Revolution to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 goals
Real Salt Lake vs. LA Galaxy 1-1
Goalkeepers had great night, when both teams met in the week 1. RSL won their first game 1-0, but Galaxy created enough chances to win it 2-1, or even 3-1. Nick Rimando saved penalty in the last minute.
On Wednesday, the Galaxy lost their CCL quarterfinal to Mexican Club Tijuana 2-4, but they showed some sparks in the second half. We should see good game with some goals, and likely RSL to win.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: RSL to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals
Toronto FC vs. D.C. United 1-0
Remodeled Toronto FC after massive start of the season, with last week 2-1 victory in Seattle, sent signal to the league. Yes, they are serious.
I’m not sure how D.C. United will compete with such powerful TFC team, but I don’t give them many chances. TFC should be able to win by more than 1 goal.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Toronto FC to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals
Columbus Crew vs. Philadelphia Union 2-1
Tough match to predict, but I’m expecting low scoring 1-2 goal game, with high probability of draw. Yes, it’s home opener for new Crew team, they beat DCU 3-0 on the road in week 1, but Union with Maurice Edu on the middle are way more demanding opponent, and Ohio band will have hard time create scoring chances.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: DRAW
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 goals
Colorado Rapids vs. Portland Timbers 2-0
Last year, the Timbers had 15 draws in regular season. This year they are already 2 on 2 with both very dissapointing home draws. I think on the road, they should be happy with a point, and the Rapids under new coach Pable Mastroeni, likely will have to wait little longer for the first victory of the season.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: DRAW
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 goals
FC Dallas vs. Chivas USA 3-1
The FC Dallas team reminds unpredictable, but we all know could be explosive in offense, and that’s what I’m counting on.
The Goats under coach Wilmer Cabrera had been impressive in their first 2 games, but host team should be able to cash 3 points.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: FC Dallas to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals
Sporting Kansas City vs. San Jose Earthquakes 1-0
Both teams coming back from Mexico, where they played second legs of CCL quarterfinals. The Sporting got outclassed by Cruz Azul loosing 1-5, pretty much was no contest. When the Earthquakes shocked the world, and after impressive 120 minutes, and massive 1-1 draw at Toluca, they lost heartbreaker in penalty kicks.
Do not expect big match by any side, they all tired and low scoring draw will do it for both teams.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: DRAW
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 goals
