MLS Week 8 Preview, Picks and Predictions

The Red Bulls started 8th week of the season with impressive 4-0 victory over strugling Houston Dynamo on Wednesday night in only midweek game, but we also have few very interesting matchups this weekend. The hopes for the first win of the season is high in Montreal and San Jose, in both cases is not going to be easy, but Quakes seem to be in better shape.

The Sounders, RSL, FC Dallas and Red Bulls are my favorites to win their matches this weekend, rest of predictions made with low level of confidence.

I’m not even 36 % in my accuracy this season, but I have been their before. I’m not blaming my self for my predictions, but the players, and sometimes referees, most of the time is their fault.:)

However, despite poor start of the campaign, I’m confident trough the season, I should be able to get back to over 50%.

Current Week 8 record 89 (accuracy 47.06 % )

Last Week 7 record 712 (accuracy 36.84 % )

2014 MLS Predictions record 4983 (accuracy 37.12 % )

Picks and predictions are usually published here at least 1-2 hours before the game time.

Houston Dynamo vs. Portland Timbers 1-1

The Timbers saw their season-opening winless run stretched to seven games in their 1-0 loss at Real Salt Lake, one shy of the club’s MLS record set July 7-Aug. 19, 2012.
The Dynamo had conceded 12 goals in the previou 5 games.

The Timbers took a 2-0 win last April 6 at home in the only meeting between the two teams, their first win ever against the Dynamo. Houston had won two of the first three meetings all-time, with a draw coming in the first game at BBVA Compass Stadium in 2012.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: DRAW
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 goals

Saturday, April 26

Montreal Impact vs. Philadelphia Union 1-0

The Impact have now gone seven games to open the season without a victory, following their 4-0 loss at Sporting Kansas City over the weekend. The longest winless streak to open a season in MLS history is 11 games (0-5-6), set by Real Salt Lake in 2007.
Union saw their winless run extended to six games – though they have four draws in that time – following their goalless result with the Houston Dynamo on Saturday afternoon.

The teams are meeting for the second time this season. Marco Di Vaio’s goal 10 minutes from time canceled out a first-half strike by Philadelphia’s Vincent Nogueira to leave the teams in a 1-1 draw, March 29 at PPL Park.
The Impact are undefeated in their last five meetings with Union, including victories in all three encounters in Montréal. Since a 2-1 Union win in the first meeting ever between the clubs, July 14, 2012 at PPL Park, Montréal is 3-0-2 in the series. The Union travel to Montreal after disappointing only 0-0 draw vs Dynamo.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: DRAW
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 goals

Seattle Sounders FC vs. Colorado Rapids 4-1

Clint Dempsey saw his goalscoring streak come to an end, but still added two assists in Sounders FC’s 2-1 win against Chivas USA over the weekend. Dempsey has six goals and three assists in his five games played this season, playing a part in nine of the 11 goals Sounders FC have scored in those matches.
The Rapids were held off the scoresheet for the first time this season in their scoreless draw with the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday afternoon.

The teams met a season ago in the Knockout Round of the MLS Cup Playoffs, Sounders FC getting goals from Brad Evans and Eddie Johnson for a 2-0 win at CenturyLink Field.
The Rapids won 5-1 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park last Oct. 5, their first victory against Sounders FC since May 29, 2010. Sounders FC had a seven-game winning streak in the series before the teams played to a 1-1 on July 20 in Seattle. Sounders FC have not lost to the Rapids in Seattle, in eight meetings in all competitions.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Sounders to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 goals

D.C. United vs. FC Dallas 4-1

FC Dallas won their fifth game in seven starts this season, coming back for a 2-1 home win vs. Toronto FC over the weekend. FCD holds the best record in MLS with 16 points from seven games.
United extended their undefeated streak to four matches, though they were seconds away from a third consecutive win before being forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at the Columbus Crew on Saturday.

United goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra saw his shutout streak come to an end after 270 minutes – the longest in MLS this season – with the late equalizer by the Crew.
FC Dallas took a 2-1 win last May 11 in Frisco in the only meeting between the teams, their first defeat of D.C. United since Aug. 14, 2010, when they won 3-1 at RFK Stadium.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: FC Dallas to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals

Columbus Crew vs. New York Red Bulls 1-1

The Crew saw their winless streak reach three games following back-to-back wins to open the season, but salvaged a late point with a 90th-minute equalizer for a 1-1 home draw with D.C. United over the weekend.
Hector Jimenez scored his first goal with the Crew to snatch the late point vs. D.C. Jimenez’s last MLS goal had come last July 7, with the LA Galaxy.

The Crew took a 2-0 victory in the final meeting between the teams last season, Aug. 10 at Crew Stadium, their first victory against the Red Bulls since the 2010 season. The Red Bulls had gone 3-0-3 in the six meetings in the series in between.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Red Bulls to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals

New England Revolution vs. Sporting Kansas City 2-0

Dom Dwyer scored his first career two-goal game in MLS, in Sporting’s 4-0 win over the Montréal Impact on Saturday evening. Dwyer has four goals in his last four games; Sporting is now riding a five-game undefeated streak.
Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth saved a penalty kick for the first time in his MLS career, stoppage a Juan Luis Anángono effort in stoppage time to secure a 1-1 draw at the Chicago Fire over the weekend. In his first 49 career MLS appearances, Shuttleworth was unable to stop four penalty kicks.
The teams met in a thrilling Eastern Conference Semifinal Series a year ago. After the Revolution won 2-1 at Gillette Stadium in the first leg, they pushed Sporting to extra time in the return match, before SKC took a 3-1 victory on their to an eventual MLS Cup championship.

In league play, Sporting are unbeaten in their last six meetings with the Revolution, and have a 502-minute shutout streak alive vs. the Revolution, their last goal conceded in the series coming July 30, 2011. New England haven’t won in Kansas City since 2008. Low scoring draw is expected.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: DRAW
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 goals

Real Salt Lake vs. Vancouver Whitecaps 2-2

Real Salt Lake remained undefeated to open the season, now seven games without loss (3-0-4) following their 1-0 home win against the Portland Timbers. Ned Grabavoy’s goal marked the third time Real have scored in the 78th minute or later this season to secure a result.
Kekuta Manneh’s second goal of the season – both of which have come in the final 10 minutes to secure a result – gave Whitecaps FC a 2-2 home draw with the LA Galaxy on Saturday.
RSL has a four-game undefeated streak alive vs. Whitecaps FC, dating back to Oct. 27, 2012. Whitecaps FC have never won at Rio Tinto Stadium, with Real having won three of the four meetings there all-time (with one draw).

Real Salt Lake won the final two meetings between the teams last season, winning 2-0 in Sandy and 1-0 at BC Place.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: RSL to WIN

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Chivas USA 1-0

The Earthquakes are still looking for their first victory in 2014, held to a scoreless draw with the Colorado Rapids over the weekend – their first defensive shutout of the year.
Chivas USA saw their winless streak extended to six games, but Erick Torres scored his sixth goal in seven matches this season in the 2-1 loss to Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday at StubHub Center.

The Quakes have not lost to Chivas USA in two seasons, winning two of the three meetings a year ago, including a 1-0 victory at StubHub Center in the final matchup.
The last Chivas USA victory in the series came July 6, 2011, a 2-0 win in Carson; San Jose is 4-0-2 in the all-time series since. The Goats are different team this year, and almost guarantee they will score, the Quakes in a must win situation, otherwise their playoffs chances going to be minimal already in April.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Earthquakes to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals
