MLS Week 9 Preview, Picks and Predictions

The 9th weekend of MLS season will start in Toronto, where fresh TFC will face Revolution, and will finish in Kansas City, where MLS Cup Champions Sporting will test the Crew.

In the MLS match of the weekend FC Dallas will host Red Bulls, but we should have plenty of attractive soccer in other games as well. Winless Timbers hoping for the first win of the season, but United are have different idea about it.

The Toronto FC, Whitecaps, Sounders, are my heavy favorites to win their match. I’m little less confident about Sporting and Chivas USA, even I picked them as winners.

Keep in mind I’m not even 38 % in my accuracy this season, but I have been their before. I’m not blaming my self for my predictions, but the players, and sometimes referees, most of the time is their fault.:)

However, despite poor start of the campaign, I’m confident trough the season, I should be able to get back to over 50%.

Current Week 9 record 810 (accuracy 44.44 % )

Sunday, May 4

FC Dallas vs. New York Red Bulls 0-1

Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his fourth goal in the last two games to bring the Red Bulls back for a 1-1 draw at the Columbus Crew on Saturday, extending their undefeated run to three games.
FC Dallas lost their second match in the last three as Mauro Díaz scored his third goal of the season in a 4-1 defeat at D.C. United over the weekend.
FC Dallas have never won at Red Bull Arena. FCD last won at New York on May 24, 2006, a 2-1 win; the Red Bulls are 5-1-0 at home vs. FC Dallas since, including a 1-0 win in the only meeting between the teams a season ago.
The FCD 2-1 win on March 11, 2012 was their first in a home game vs. New York since the 2009 season.

This is going to be game of the weekend, FC Dallas will play without 2 suspended players Michel and Zach Loyd for last game red cards. Bad news are keep coming for FC Dallas as their key playmaker Mauro Diaz is out for the season with a knee injury. I still believe FCD have enough talent to compete with winless on the road Red Bulls. Expect some goals there, and close game, there is very high possibility of draw, but likely points will stay in Texas.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: FC Dallas to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals

Sporting Kansas City vs. Columbus Crew 2-0

Sporting saw their five-game undefeated run come to an end in a 2-0 loss at New England on Saturday, their second defeat of the season – both coming on goals scored in second-half stoppage time.
The Crew reached their third consecutive tie – all by a 1-1 scoreline – as they drew with the New York Red Bulls on Saturday.

The Sporting lost last game in stoppage, and high motivation should be on their side, even without suspended Aurélien Collin they will show us why they are MLS Cup Champs.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Sporting to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 goals

Saturday, May 3

Toronto FC vs. New England Revolution 1-2

CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Toronto FC to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 goals

Vancouver Whitecaps FC vs. San Jose Earthquakes 3-2

While Whitecaps FC saw their winless streak extended to four matches, for a second consecutive game they scored a late equalizer to grab a point, coming back from two goals down for a 2-2 draw with Real Salt Lake on Saturday – the tying goal a bomb from 35 yards out by Sebastián Fernández.
The Earthquakes won their first match of the season Saturday as Yannick Djálo scored his first MLS goal, defeating Chivas USA 1-0 at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Whitecaps FC have never won at Buck Shaw Stadium. But in four meetings all-time in Santa Clara, the Quakes have won only once – a 3-1 win in 2012.

The Earthquakes have never won in Vancouver. Whitecaps FC have won their last three home meetings between the clubs, including a 2-0 victory last Aug. 10 in the only match between the two at BC Place.
The Earthquakes have 3 players with World Cup hopes, and playing on turf at B.C. Place they will focus more how not get injured, than anything else. Its hard to believe the Whitecaps will not win this one.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Whitecaps to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 Goals

Chicago Fire vs. Real Salt Lake 2-3

The Fire return to action after a weekend off, equaling an MLS record with a sixth consecutive draw in their last match, a 1-1 tie with the New England Revolution. The Colorado Rapids were the last to record six straight ties, from May 7-June 4, 2011; the San Jose Earthquakes also had six in a row from the end of the 2004 campaign through the start of 2005.
Real Salt Lake maintained their undefeated start to the season (3-0-5), but conceded an equalizing goal in the 90th minute or later for a third time in their 2-2 draw with Vancouver Whitecaps FC over the weekend.

The teams have played to draws in each of their last two meetings, over the last two seasons. The two encounters at Toyota Park have resulted in scoreless draws.
RSL’s last home win vs. the Fire came Sept. 19, 2010, a 1-0 win at Rio Tinto Stadium. The teams played to a 1-1 in Sandy in their only meeting a year ago.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: DRAW
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 goals

Colorado Rapids vs. LA Galaxy 1-0

Dillon Serna became the first Homegrown Player in Colorado Rapids history to score a goal, netting his team’s lone marker in their 4-1 defeat at Seattle Sounders FC to snap a three-game undefeated run.
The Galaxy return to league play following another bye week, their undefeated streak stretched to four matches last time out, a 2-2 draw at Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the back end of a home-and-home series.

The Rapids have won last two meetings between the teams, ending a six-game winless streak over the previous two-plus seasons. Colorado’s last win vs. the Galaxy had come in 2010.
Colorado’s win last July 27 was its first vs. LA at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park since 2008. The Rapids then won Sept. 7 at StubHub Center, their first win in Carson vs. the Galaxy since 2010.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Galaxy to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 goals

Seattle Sounders FC vs. Philadelphia Union 2-1

Clint Dempsey continued his remarkable run of form, netting a pair of goals to lead Sounders FC to a 4-1 home win against Colorado over the weekend. Dempsey has 8 goals and 2 assists in his last 5 games.
Union saw their winless streak extended to seven games over the weekend in a 1-0 loss at the Montréal Impact. The streak is one game short of the Union club record, set both during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

Union own the only road victory in the six matches in the history of the series, a 2-0 win in Seattle on Oct. 8, 2011.
The Sounders are hot, and Union are not, this could be shooting festival with another 2 goals or hat trick by Clint Dempsey.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Sounders to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals

Chivas USA vs. Houston Dynamo 1-4

The Dynamo defeated Chivas USA 5-1 a year ago at StubHub Center, their largest victory ever in the series. All-time in Houston, Chivas USA are winless in league play (0-8-2).
The Dynamo have won the last two meetings between the teams, over the last two seasons, since a Chivas USA 3-0 victory on July 23, 2011. That was Chivas USA’s first win against Houston since 2006.
The Dynamo put an end to their three-game losing run, but still saw their winless streak stretched to six games with a 1-1 home draw with Portland on Sunday afternoon.

Chivas USA saw their winless streak extended to seven games in their 1-0 defeat at the San Jose Earthquakes over the weekend, but they did not play bad at all. The Dynamo on the other has Brad Davis back, but they also have many holes.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Chivas USA win
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals

Portland Timbers vs. D.C. United 3-2

D.C. United scored four goals – their biggest offensive output in nearly two seasons – in a 4-1 home win against FC Dallas over the weekend. Their last 4-goal game was a 4-2 win vs. Chicago, Aug. 22, 2012.
Fabián Espíndola scored the seventh multiple-goal game of his MLS career, netting a pair of goals and also adding an assist in United’s win. Espíndola has four goals and three assists this season, involved on the scoresheet in seven of D.C.’s 10 goals for the season.
The Timbers saw their season-opening winless streak extended to eight games, following their 1-1 road draw with the Houston Dynamo on Sunday. The streak matches the club’s MLS record, set previously July 7-Aug. 19, 2012.

Since winning the first meeting ever between the clubs, a 3-2 win May 29, 2011 in Portland, United have not claimed a victory. The Timbers have won once – a 2-0 win last May 25 in the only meeting between the teams.
You would think that’s about time for Timbers to win, but United are capable to earn a point there, and fans in Portland will have to wait little longer for first win of the season.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: DRAW
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 goals
