MLS Week 21 Preview, Picks and Predictions

Three very interesting matches waiting for MLS fans this Sunday. In Vancouver, the Whitecaps hosting MLS Champions Sporting Kansas City. In Chicago, desperate for points Fire hosting New York Red Bulls. 21st week of the season will end in Seattle, where Sounders will look for rebound, win and 3 points in the game vs Houston Dynamo.

The Sounders are my favorites to win, and I’m also expecting high scoring game there.

*Keep in mind I’m only around 42 % in my accuracy this season, but I have been there before. I’m not blaming my self for my predictions, but the players, and sometimes referees, most of the time is their fault.:)

However, despite poor start of the campaign, I’m confident trough the season, I should be able to get back to over 50%, but obvious goal is to cross 54% as earlier as possible.

SEATTLE SOUNDERS vs. HOUSTON DYNAMO 2-0

The Sounders are lost their last two games, and they also lost top spot in the Western Conference, after RSL pass they yesterday with 3-0 win over D.C. United. The Sounders are one of the favorites to win MLS Cup this year, but they have lost 3 out in their last 4 matches. Team from Houston has very questionable defense, and I wont change my opinion about that after their last week 1-0 win over DCU. Yes, it happened, but in dramatic fashion, and last second game-winner was as lucky, as can be.
Nationally televised on ESPN2 Sunday night match, and weak opponent seem like a perfect opportunity for Sounders to rebound, have strong game, and convincing win.

CHRIS’S PREDICTION:SOUNDERS to WINOVER 2.5 Goals

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS vs. SPORTING KC 2-0

Recent developments in Western Conference, putting pressure on the Whitecaps, but Sporting is one of the best teams in MLS. Team from Vancouver needs points to stay in playoffs race, but they draw already 11 games this season, including last 4, and missing points putting pressure and extra motivation on Whitecaps team.
The Sporting on the other hand is on fire, SKC have won 4 of their last 5 games, including 3 on the road. SKC 1-1 tie with Union was one of the biggest surprises of the weekend.
“We want to win,” SKC manager Peter Vermes said. “I don’t know what else to say. We want to win, and we want to get the points. That’s why you see us go play the way we do on the road as well. We want to win, and we’re disappointed. We’re disappointed not coming out of that game with three points.
I’m expecting both teams putting lots of attention to defense, but Whitecaps playing at home, and I believe they can score game winner.

CHRIS’S PREDICTION:WHITECAPS to WINUNDER 2.5 Goals

CHICAGO FIRE vs. NEW YORK RED BULLS 1-0

Every time I pick Fire to win, they disappoint and draw, I’m doing it again, because they know how to deal with the Red Bulls. This is going to be third meeting this season for both teams, and Fire are got 4 points out from first 2 matches between the rivals. The Fire beat Red Bulls 5-4 on the road, when Bradley Wright-Phillips rookie Harry Shipp exchanged hat tricks. On the beginning of the season they draw 1-1 at Toyota Park.
The biggest problem for Chicago Fire team this season, is to finish the games. They lost so many points in the final minutes, and Red Bulls has very talented, but aging squad, and they might be out of gas in the final minutes. Mainly because of giving away so many goals in the final minutes, The Fire has already 13 ties, the most in MLS this season, and just 3 behind the all-time league record set in 2011, of course by the Fire. This match is a strong candidate for a draw, but once again I’m picking Fire to win.

CHRIS’S PREDICTION:FIRE to WINOVER 2.5 Goals

Saturday, August 9

PHILADELPHIA UNION vs. MONTREAL IMPACT 2-1

Union coming to this game 3 points out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, and Impact is 10 points back, and they will have to watch playoffs in tv this year.
Lately Union playing much better soccer, they are undefeated in their last 4 matches, and their 1-1 draw in Kansas City with Sporting, it was nothing but the proof they plain well.
The Impact MLS losing streak extended to 6 games in a 0-2 loss to Toronto FC at home. My favorite can be only one, Union win and, we should see a few goals at PPL Park.

CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNION to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals

COLUMBUS CREW vs. TORONTO FC 2-3

This will be third meeting this season for both teams, with Toronto FC victorious on both occasions, at BMO Field and at the Crew Stadium.
The Crew are seem to be in form, they are undefeated in last three matches, and their star Federico Higuain scored 2 goals in his last 2 matches.
Before Toronto FC finally won 2-0 in Montreal vs weak Impact, they lost two games to Eastern Conference top teams D.C. United 0-3 and Sporting 1-2, they not as consistent as some may think. I would pick Crew team to win, with some goals in the match.

CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Crew to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals

FC DALLAS vs. COLORADO RAPIDS 3-1

FC Dallas last time lost in MLS play, it was on June 1, 1-2 to San Jose Earthquakes on the road, and even in that game they dominated, just didn’t scored. In their last 11 matches including U.S. Open Cup and friendlies, FC Dallas have lost only once, 0-2 in friendly match to English Premier League club Aston Villa.
On the other hand visitors, Colorado Rapids in their last 6 games, recorded 3 loses, 2 draws and just 1 win 3-0, but over Chivas USA. My favorite in this one can be only one, FC Dallas should win, and over 2.5 goals seem to be safe pick.

CHRIS’S PREDICTION: FC DALLAS to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals

REAL SALT LAKE vs. D.C. UNITED 3-0

This could be match of the weekend. Vice-leader of Eastern Conference D.C. United, visiting currently second in Western Conference RSL. Expect tactical game, with high probability of low scoring draw.

CHRIS’S PREDICTION: DRAW
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 goals

PORTLAND TIMBERS vs. CHIVAS USA 2-0

Timbers cannot afford not to win this match, they are loaded with talent, high expectations, but they are still out of playoffs zone. Chivas USA seasoned players will have hard time on very difficult, artficial turf at Providence Park in Portland. I wouldn’t bet my house on over in this match, but I’m confident in Timbers win.

CHRIS’S PREDICTION: TIMBERS to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals

LOS ANGELES GALAXY vs. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES 2-2

The Galaxy playing very good soccer lately, and extended their home undefeated streak last weekend with a 3-1 win against the Portland Timbers.
The Quakes have also been playing better lately, and gone three games in a row without loss. On opening Levi’s Stadium they capture 1-0 win against the Western conference leaders Seattle Sounders. However, Earthquakes have offensive injury problems. Key playmaker Yannick Djalo is out for this match, and injured Steven Lenhart, left Chris Wondolowski as striker.
This match is definitely bigger challenge for Quakes coach Mark Watson, than for Galaxy boss Bruce Arena.
The Galaxy star Landon Donovan announced his retirement after that season. When him and Robbie Keane getting most of the attention, young striker Gyasi Zardes scored 5 goals in the last 5 games.
“He has worked at it. Success is not an accident. He came in last year and he was still raw. There were number of chances that he didn’t score. Every day after the training, he is working with the coaches, just finishing. Simple finishing; getting in front of the goal and hitting the target. So, even this year, when he doesn’t score, he is hitting the target consistently and giving himself a chance to score. It was good to see that work pay off.” – said Landon Donovan about his teammates.

In the last California Clasico The Galaxy won 1-0 on June 28 at Stanford Stadium, and they are my favorites to get 3 points on Friday, and expecting more than 2 goals in the match.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Galaxy to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 goals
