MLS Week 33 / 2014 Picks and Predictions

The first legs of Conference Semifinals, starting the most serious part of the season, and from last Wednesday every kick counts. MLS Playoffs weekend starts without defending MLS Cup Champions Sporting, and Vancouver WhiteCaps. As expected KC team has been already eliminated by the Red Bulls, and WhiteCaps tried hard, but penalty kick pushed powerful FC Dallas to Western Conference semifinal.

The Crew are my favorites to win this Saturday, with total more than 2 goals expected in this match.

Current Week 33 record 84 (accuracy 66.67 % )

Last Week 32 record 77 (accuracy 50.00 % )

2014 MLS Predictions record 311338 (accuracy 47.92 % )

*Keep in mind I’m only around 47 % in my accuracy this season, but I have been there before. I’m not blaming my self for my predictions, but the players, and sometimes referees, most of the time is their fault.:)

However, despite poor start of the campaign, I’m confident trough the season, I should be able to get back to over 50%, but obvious goal is to cross 54% as earlier as possible.

Picks and predictions are usually published here at least 1-2 hours before the game time.

NEW YORK RED BULLS vs. D.C. UNITED, 4 PM
The Red Bulls defeated Sporting KC 2-1 on Thursday, in one game elimination, and have won their first postseason game at home since the 2005 season, their first playoff win ever at Red Bull Arena. The Red Bulls had lost their last four home postseason matches, and were winless in seven in a row. “There was a point late in the second half where I was questioning if this team was scared of the playoffs,” said Red Bulls head coach Mike Petke. “Over the last couple of years, I’ve been saying I don’t believe in any curses, or jinxes or any-thing like that, but I thought maybe we were just scared of the playoffs. But they proved that wrong.” … Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his second and third career postseason goals, netting last year in the conference semifinals against Houston, in the second leg at Red Bull Arena. Wright-Phillips has 29 goals in all com-petitions this season, tied for fifth-most by an MLS player in a single year. Will BWP score on Sunday?

D.C. United enter the postseason riding a six-game undefeated streak in league play, their longest of the season, and a nine-game run without a loss in all competitions. Their last loss came on Sept. 10 to semifinal opponents New York Red Bulls.
“I’m happy we battled back to get a draw on the road (in the season finale),” said United head coach Ben Olsen. “I think you set your-self up to succeed in the playoffs and that goal woke us up a little bit. Once the goal hit, we started to bring the full hunger that`s necessary to win games in this league. In the second half we played some good stuff and were a little bit unlucky not to get that win. It gave us the right momentum to start the playoffs.”
I believe in at least 3 goals in this match more than in Red Bulls win, but they playing at home, and they are capable of taking advantage of it.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION:Red Bulls to WINOVER 2.5 Goals

FC DALLAS vs. SEATTLE SOUNDERS 1-1
FC Dallas won their first playoff game since 2010, winning for the ninth time in the last 10 matches in league and cup play at Toyota Stadium.
FC Dallas will play without suspended playmaker Mauro Diaz, but they are still extremely dangerous for the opponents, in the final third. Expect them to score.

Sounders FC enter the postseason as the top seed overall by virtue of winning the Supporters’ Shield. But the Shield winner has not doubled as MLS Cup champion since 2011, and just twice in the last 11 seasons. “To me if you look around at other leagues, if you win the league it’s a big deal no matter what the public thinks of it,” said Clint Dempsey. “We were the best team through-out the course of the league and around other leagues, that’s celebrated more so than when it is in the States, but we are going to celebrate it as a championship. We have two now and we are looking to win an MLS Cup.
Since June 2014, Sounders are my favorites to win MLS Cup this year, but I don’t think they will win first leg in Dallas.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION:FC Dallas to WINOVER 2.5 Goals

COLUMBUS CREW vs. NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION 2-4
The Crew come into the postseason as one of the hottest teams in MLS.
The Crew are the winners of three in a row (matching their three-game winning streak to start the season), and with just one loss over their last eight matches. “We have
guys like Hector Jimenez and Michael Parkhurst who have been there, and that will help the guys such as myself who have not made the playoffs,” said goalkeeper Steve Clark. There is good and bad with [playoff inexperience]. People are going to say that we have a lot of inexperience, but at the same time, we are just going to go about it like we have the entire season.”

The Revolution are also one of the hottest teams in the league, undefeated in their last five games, and with a 9-2-1 mark since early August. The only loss the 1-0 defeat at Columbus on Sept. 20.
“It’s good to go with a win
to the playoffs. I can only talk from the time I come, but we lose only one game to Columbus,” said Jermaine Jones. “We battled Kansas City, we battled Columbus here at home. We showed the whole league that everybody has to respect us. If not we will make it hard in games.”
The Crew should be able to take home field advantage in the first leg, and I’m also expecting some goals in Ohio.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION:CREW to WINOVER 2.5 Goals

REAL SALT LAKE vs LA GALAXY 0-0
Real Salt Lake come into the playoffs not having allowed a goal in their last 313 minutes, since Oct. 5, the sixth-longest shutout streak in MLS this season. Goalkeeper Nick Rimando has been between the posts for the last two. “Three straight shutouts and I think the fight has been good for us. The battle is like what you’re looking for when you’re making a playoff run, so we’re heading in the right direction,” said defender Nat
Borchers. Said RSL head coach Jeff Cassar: “We’re not scared of anyone. This group of guys knows what it takes to win in the playoffs. And you can see in the last three games where we’re really amped it up a little bit.” For the second consecutive year and the third time in the last four seasons, Real and the LA Galaxy will meet in the MLS Cup Playoffs. A year ago, RSL won the quarterfinal series between the clubs 2-1 on aggregate.

The Galaxy come into the postseason without a win in their last three matches, their longest streak in league play without a victory since going 0-2-2 from April 19-May 17. “We are OK with the way we played (vs. Seattle).” said Landon Donovan.
”We just needed to find a goal and that that let us down but overall an excellent performance. And obviously results matter and it’s hard to lose but I think we can we can be confident with how we played.”. The Galaxy were also shut out in the season finale for the first time in league play since
May 17, a stretch of 25 consecutive games with a goal. They led MLS with 69 goals scored this season; they were shut out just four times, fewest in MLS, but once was by Real Salt Lake. “It doesn’t matter who we play. We don’t play those little games of
payback. We play to try and win a championship,” said Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena.
I expect even, low scoring match, with high possibility of draw.
