MLS Week 30 Picks and Predictions

The MLS Sunday at the end of 30th weekend of the season, offers three matches one after another. Seattle Sounders traveling to Kansas City, and normally this would be game of the weekend, but this time Sporting has to rotate a lineup a bit, ahead of their U.S. Open Cup final next Wednesday in Philadelphia. San Jose Earthquakes taking on recently hot Real Salt Lake, but don’t expect many goals there. The last match FC Dallas at LA Galaxy seem to be the most inviting in terms of goals.

NEW YORK RED BULLS vs ORLANDO CITY SC 2-5

Orlando City will try and go for three straight wins to keep up the pressure on their Eastern Conference rivals, but Red Bulls are one of the best MLS teams. Red Bulls playmaker Sacha Kljestan has phenomenal season, and together with outstanding goalkeeping by Luis Robles, and consistent, solid defending by Matt Miazga, plus all the offensive weapons Bradley Wright-Phillips (14 goals), Mike Grella and Lloyd Sam both netted 7 times this season – that’s should be enough for visitors this Friday. Orlando City SC travel to New Jersey in very positive mood, and more than excited after they earned their second straight win last week. Orlando SC head coach Adrian Heath expressed his admiration to Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch – WATCH VIDEO Only 20 years old, but already Designated Player, Honduran hope Bryan Rochez scored in his second straight game. Mainly thanks to his goals, and very good, consistent defensive performances, Orlando SC is still in the playoff talks. This time young Bryan Rochez facing really tough challenge vs Red Bulls. One of the best MLS centerbacks Matt Miazga should be more than ready for him, and one of the best keepers in the league Luis Robles in the net, is not easy to beat either. Here is what Red Bulls manager Jesse Marsch has to say about Friday game Red Bull Arena is not the most welcoming venue for visiting teams, and Orlando will have hard time to get result there. You may think that Red Bulls motivation will go down after clinching the playoffs, but staying on the top of the table is very important, because that position guarantee home field advantage trough the playoffs, and also could benefit top teams to host the very last game of the season, which is MLS Cup final – that is huge. Orlando SC coming to this game after winning two matches, but lets look at those closely. First, it was at home vs struggling Sporting KC 3-1, and second againt worse team in the league Chicago Fire, club that actually fired their coach Frank Yallop after that match. Keep in mind that despite of all the hype, and positives Orlando SC has big problems on the road, when traveling to mid table or top MLS teams. In two trips to Toronto, one to New England and one to Seattle, the Orlando SC team has scored only 1 (ONE) goal, and conceded 16 (sixteen). The stats don’t lie, and Red Bulls powerful offense in their last 4 matches at Red Bull Arena only once didn’t scored 3 goals, in 2-0 more than convincing victory in derby vs NYCFC. Those numbers make me think, if Orlando allowed 16 goals in their recent 4 trips to good or decent teams, conclusion clearly comes that Red Bulls will have a nationally televised shooting practice tonight.

CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Red Bulls to WIN
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Red Bulls -1.5 to WIN by at least 2 goals
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 Goals
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 3.5 Goals

MONTREAL IMPACT vs CHICAGO FIRE 2-1

After coaching change Montreal Impact all the sudden looking solid, team under Mauro Biello doesn’t concede many goals, and getting results. In their last game, in very difficult, heavy rain conditions Didier Drogba scored his 4th goal in Impact uniform, plus also added his first MLS assist, as the Impact extended their undefeated streak to four games – their longest of the season – with a impressive 3-0 win against, one of the top teams the New England Revolution on Saturday night at Stade Saputo. The Fire suffered their 3rd consecutive defeat in a 1-0 loss to Orlando City SC on Saturday evening at Toyota Park, enough is enough, and after the game club fired head coach Frank Yallop. Brian Bliss was named as interim head coach, but don’t expect miracles from him. The teams are meeting for the third time this season, splitting the first two. It was in the game against Chicago Fire, Didier Drogba became the first player in MLS history to score a hat trick in his first league start – including the tying and winning goals in a four-minute span in the second half – hauling the Impact back for a 4-3 win Sept. 5 at Stade Saputo. On May 30 at Toyota Park, Harry Shipp, Jeff Larentowicz and Kennedy Igboananike netted goals to lead the Fire to a 3-0 win. When there is new coach, team typically don’t loose, but I’m afraid that even with Brian Bliss on the bench, the Fire will have hard time in Montreal, and has very little chance to get result at Saputo Stadium. If there will be no rain, we should see high scoring match, with Impact netting one more goal than visitors. CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Impact to WIN CHRIS’S PREDICTION: OVER 2.5 Goals

HOUSTON DYNAMO vs SPORTING KANSAS CITY 1-0

This could be tricky match to predict. Sporting KC ended a 5 game winless run with a 3-1 win against FC Dallas on last Friday evening in Kansas City. Where Benny Feilhaber scored two goals in a game, but to be fair for some reason visitors made things easier for Sporting, and FC Dallas coach Oscar Pareja started the game with 3 key starters on the bench??? Referee Mark Geiger also called of a good goal for FC Dallas, so even Sporting have finally won, they are still didn’t look too convincing. On the other hand Houston Dynamo played awful, terrible game in Philadelphia, where they lost 0-2, but wasted so many scoring opportunity, and at moments they looked like they don’t want to score. It was very weird game, with Union controlling it from the beginning to the end.

Motivation seem to be key factor in this game, and Sporting have high aspiration, and would love to end regular season as high as possible in the table, to earn home field advantage for the playoffs, when Houston Dynamo at this point is playing only for pride.

Don’t expect many goals here, Sporting KC coach Peter Vermes has to rotate the lineup, because his team has tough schedule in week ahead. After coming back from Houston, on Sunday Sporting will have very important for playoffs standings match vs Sounders, and on next Wednesday, September 30 U.S. Open Cup final at Philadelphia Union. Winning in Houston will give Sporting some comfort for the next few games, and will take little pressure off their next game vs Seattle.
CHRIS’S PREDICTION: Sporting to WIN CHRIS’S PREDICTION: UNDER 2.5 Goals
