New York Red Bulls vs Montreal Impact Preview and Prediction

After clinching the MLS Playoffs, New York Red Bulls are on the top of the Eastern Conference with Supporters’ Shield on their target. On Wednesday evening at Red Bull Arena, they will host shorthanded Montreal Impact, but will Jesse Marsch team deliver as favorite?

In their last game, Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his 15th goal of the season – now in a tie for sixth in the MLS Golden Boot standings – as the Red Bulls maintained their lead atop the Eastern Conference and pulled into a tie in the Supporters’ Shield standings with a 2-1 win against very good Columbus Crew team on Saturday.
The Impact had their 3-game winning streak ended, as they dropped a 2-1 on the road at Orlando City SC, playing well, but difficult artificial pitch at Citrus Bowl affected performance of some of their experienced players.
The teams are meeting for the second time this season. The Impact’s Dominic Oduro and the Red Bulls’ Lloyd Sam scored on either side of halftime as the teams reached a 1-1 draw August 5th, at Stade Saputo.
The Red Bulls have a 5 game undefeated streak alive vs. the Impact, with 3 wins in that time. The last Montréal win in the series was a 1-0 win at Stade Saputo in the first meeting in 2013.
Here is what Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch has to say about Didier Drogba, and his role on Montreal team.
The Red Bulls have won all 4 league meetings lifetime at Red Bull Arena, though once the teams reached a 1-1 draw in CONCACAF Champions League group play last year. The Red Bulls have come away with points on 3 of their 4 trips to Montréal all-time.
One of the best in the business, Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles, talks about team focus on the game:

The Red Bulls will miss only one of the MLS best, and most promising Polish-American center-back Matt Miazga, but they did well without him in last game vs Crew.
Red Bulls midfielder Dax McCarty assuring us, his team will be focus and ready for the challenge:
The game is scheduled at official FIFA dates, and because of that Montreal Impact will play without some of their key starters. According to MLSsoccer.com rightback Ambroise Oyongo should be with Cameroon National Team, but all the sudden he’s in the lineup, but Impact striker Johan Vanegas was called up by Costa Rica national team.
Wandrille Lefevre, Kyle Bekker, and Maxim Tissot all called up to Canada NT for friendly vs Ghana, but somehow Tissot is on the bench.

Youngsters Maxime Crépeau, Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé, and Anthony Jackson-Hamel are with Canada U-23 in Olympic qualifiers, and Eric Miller is representing USA U-23 in the same tournament. That’s serious number of players missing, even some of them are bench warmers.

Clearly the Red Bulls have their numbers, and I believe they can they deliver once again on midweek game vs shorthanded Impact team.
