Colorado Rapids vs Montreal Impact Preview and Prediction

In the only MLS match this weekend, Didier Drogba and Montreal Impact taking trip to Colorado, to face the Rapids. Even the Rapids are officially eliminated from the playoffs, for Impact to earn much needed points out there, might not be as easy as it look on the paper.

The Rapids winless stretch was extended to 5 games with a 2-1 loss to Real Salt Lake at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park last Sunday, and they did not convince me as team, but they can score.
The match in Colorado is the third of four consecutive away matches for the Impact, a trip which started with a 2-1 loss at Orlando City SC and continued with a midweek visit and 1-2 loss to the New York Red Bulls.

The Impact next travel to very good, and highly motivated team New England Revolution, before their regular season concludes with a game against Toronto FC on Oct. 25. When you look at the table, not cashing 3 points in Colorado on Saturday, could have consequences in missing the playoffs.
The Rapids have nothing to loose at this point, they playing now only for prestige and some players for next year contracts.

The Rapids could feel good about visiting Impact, because they won all three meetings between the clubs, including a 4-1 win May 24, 2014 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in their only meeting last season.
The Rapids have won two meetings in Commerce City, outscoring the Impact 7-3. They won the lone meeting in Montréal, a 4-3 win in 2013 at Stade Saputo.

The Impact played last Wednesday at Red Bull Arena, have lost not only points, but also two players for this Saturday game. Right-back Ambroise Oyongo, was sent off and his red card automatically eliminates him for this match, and center-midfielder Marco Donadel got his yellow card vs Red Bulls, and for cards accumulation has to serve suspension in this match.

This weekend it’s official FIFA date, and Impact will also miss solid group of players on international duty: Maxime Crepeau, Anthony Jackson-Hamel, Jeremy Gagnon-Lapare (Canada; CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship); Wandrille Lefevre, Kyle Bekker, Maxim Tissot (Canada; vs. Ghana, 10/13), and Johan Venegas (Costa Rica; at USA, 10/13).

The Rapids don’t have as many players on international duty, but Dillon Serna (USA; CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship), and Gabriel Torres (Panama; at Mexico, 10/13) will be out.

Tough game to predict, because on one hand you have motivated Impact with so many players missing, and tough midweek game vs Red Bulls in their legs, plus travel to elevated Colorado.

On the other hand, the Rapids, team that playing last game at home this season. Playing only for pride and next year contracts, and they not going to make anything easy for visitors.

This game looks like a perfect candidate for a draw, but I’m picking home team to win. The Rapids will be fresher, and in the final 15-20 minutes of the game they should take advantage of tired opponent.

* I’m planning to stick with this prediction, but please double check here shortly before the game, about 25-30 minutes before scheduled kickoff. I may adjust my picks after starting lineups announced, or if I notice some other weird pregame developments.
