The Seattle Sounders play host to the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final on Tuesday night as they seek a historic win. A victory would give the club three consecutive Open Cup titles, something not accomplished since 1969 by Greek American out of New York (Stix, Baer and Fuller/St. Louis Central Breweries won three in a row from 1933 to 1935).

U.S. Soccer – National Soccer Hall of Fame Appoints New Board

CHICAGO (June 13, 2011) – As part of the continued transition of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, a new nine-member Board of Directors has been appointed. The former National Soccer Hall of Fame Board of Directors approved the new board members during their last official meeting.
The new board members are Dr. Bob Contiguglia, Ed Foster-Simeon, Evelyn Gill, Mia Hamm, Brendan Moylan, Len Oliver, Alec Papadakis, Nelson Rodriguez and Hank Steinbrecher. Steinbrecher will serve as the Chairman of the Board.

U.S. Soccer Announces Possible Hosts for Second Round of 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup

U.S. Soccer has announced the possible home teams for the second round of the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Results from the first round of play on June 14 will determine the matchups for the second round to take place one week later on Tuesday, June 21.

U.S. Open Cup – Chicago Fire and Sporting Kansas City advanced – US Open Cup structure and schedule

Sporting Kansas City became the final Major League Soccer team to qualify for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 5-0 victory against the New England Revolution last night at Blue Valley District Athletic Complex in Overland Park, Kan. The 98th edition of this tournament begins June 14 with 16 first round games.
Six MLS teams automatically qualified to the U.S. Open Cup based on last year’s league position. These teams include the Los Angeles Galaxy, Real Salt Lake, New York Red Bulls, FC Dallas, Columbus Crew and Seattle Sounders. The Chicago Fire also earned a berth to the Open Cup on Tuesday evening (May 24) by defeating the San Jose Earthquakes in penalty kicks. The eight MLS teams will join the tournament in the Third Round.

The San Jose Earthquakes burst out to a 2-0 halftime lead, but the Chicago Fire came back to even the score in the second half, before winning on penalties in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Play-in match Tuesday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. Chicago won the shootout 5-4 after a scoreless 30 minutes of overtime.

U.S. Open Cup – Details about D.C. United vs. Philadelphia Union, game on April 6

Washington, D.C. (March 2, 2011) – D.C. United today announced details for its U.S. Open Cup play-in game against the Philadelphia Union. The Black-and-Red will play host to the Union on Wednesday, April 6 at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, MD. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm.
Tickets will go on sale on Monday, March 7 via the D.C. United front office. D.C. United plan holders (full season, 10-game and flex) will be able to purchase $16 tickets in advance or for $20 on the day of the game. Full Season Ticket Holders will also have access to reserved midfield seating by showing their 2011 Season Ticket Holder membership card the day of the game. The general public will be able to purchase tickets in advance for $20 or for $25 on the day of the game.

U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame Class of 2011 Candidates Finalized, Balloting Begins Today

Ballots have been finalized for the National Soccer Hall of Fame Class of 2011 and voting will begin immediately for the Player, Veteran Player and Builder categories. Voting will continue through March 11, and the election results will be announced in early Spring.

The all-time cap leader for the U.S. Men’s National Team, Cobi Jones, joins five others in their first year of eligibility for the Player ballot. Chris Armas, Jason Kreis, Carlos Llamosa, Eddie Pope and Danielle Slaton are also on the ballot for the first time. Of the 25 total players on the Player ballot, only Steve Trittschuh is in his final year of eligibility.
