MLS – Sounders FC extended Head Coach Sigi Schmid Contract Potentially Through 2015

RENTON, WASHINGTON - Seattle Sounders FC has signed head coach Sigi Schmid to a contract extension which could keep him with the club through the 2015 Major League Soccer season. Schmid, 58, was named the first head coach of Sounders FC on December 16, 2008, and has guided the Rave Green to two consecutive Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championships and MLS Cup Playoff berths in both 2009 and 2010. The San Jose Earthquakes stretched their unbeaten streak to three games with a 2-1 win over the New England Revolution Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes came to life in the second half with goals from Ellis McLoughlin and Bobby Convey. McLoughlin headed home his first career goal following a perfect cross from Chris Wondolowski in the 71st minute to open the scoring. Convey then curled home an incredible free kick to give San Jose a two-goal cushion. Revs midfielder Chris Tierney scored a free kick of his own in the 86th minute to cut the score to 2-1, but the Quakes held on to win their second straight game at home. Read More »

MLS – New England Revolution midfielder Pat Phelan expects return against Vancouver

The lingering effects forced Phelan to miss matches against Sporting Kansas City (April 23) and Chivas USA (April 30), but he expected to carve out a place in the squad for last weekend's 0-0 draw with Colorado. SANTA CLARA, California – First-half goals from Brad Evans and O'Brian White provided Seattle Sounders FC with the offense in a 2-2 draw on the road against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. Seattle (0-2-2, 2 points) doubled its season point total with its second straight draw, but continues to seek its first victory of 2011. San Jose moved to 1-1-1 yet remains winless at home. San Jose initially trailed 1-0 after Brad Evans finished a close-range shot in the 17th minute. That set the stage for Simon Dawkins to score his first career MLS goal in the 32nd minute. Dawkins received a through ball from Ryan Johnson, turned and fired a left-footed shot that beat Sounders FC goalkeeper Kasey Keller to the far post. Read More »
